2. Tape lifting, edge peeling, or solder wicking. Tape edges lift during reflow or wave soldering, letting molten solder creep underneath and contaminate protected areas. Root causes: adhesion too low at peak temperature, contaminated or oily surfaces, insufficient application pressure, or a tape grade chosen below the process profile.
3. Tape tearing or breaking during removal. The film snaps or shreds when peeled, leaving fragments stuck on the board and forcing time-consuming manual cleaning. Root causes: the film became brittle under sustained heat, the adhesive bond is too strong, or the tape was removed at the wrong angle or speed.
4. Discoloration, embrittlement, or shrinkage under heat. The tape degrades visibly after exposure, losing dimensional stability and protective performance. Root causes: the backing film or adhesive is not designed for the sustained temperature and duration of your process.

5. Inconsistent masking from thickness variation or poor cutting. Uneven caliper causes uneven masking or leakage at edges, while rough die-cut edges and burrs lift and trap flux. Root causes: loose thickness tolerance from the supplier and poor slitting or die-cutting quality.
